West Indies lose Test Series to Bangladesh

The West Indies could sadly not contain a determined Bangladesh side in the conclusion of play in the second test and have now lost the series in Grenada. It is the first time that Bangladesh have won a test series away from home soil.

Set a target of 215 the Tigers batsmen began to fight fire with fire when Raqibul took to the crease with the score at 29-2. He was joined by Shakib at 67-4 and the pair went on to form a formidable partnership, chalking up a 106 to put their team in a great position to seal the win. Spinner Darren Sammy threatened to drag the Windies back into the game with a 5 wicket haul but the highlight of the day’s play was the battle between the fast bowler Kemar Roach and Raqibul. Roach had caught out the batsman on the second day and Raqibul was in no mood to be turned over again, sticking doggedly to his self endowed task of winning the game for Bangladesh.

Raqibul’s wicket eventually tumbled 42 runs short of the target so it fell to Shakib to hit the win at 5.38pm in some style with a lofted drive over Long On from Roach’s ball.

West Indies vs Bangladesh – 2nd Test Day 3 – Grenada

A frustrating day yesterday for the Windies in Grenada. By tea they were just 192-8 after Bangladesh came back strongly with their spinners, rain forced an early end to the day’s play.

Among the batsmen it was David Bernard who payed best, ending the day on 61 not out, however he didn’t find much support from his team mates. After a good partnership spell between Bernard and Travis Dowlin the innings came under sustained threat from the Tigers spin bowlers, most notably Shakib and Mahmudullah. Dowlin – one of the Windies few stars of the 2nd test so far – was very unfortunate to be given out with what replays suggest was an umpiring mistake after he shouldered arms to a Enamul delivery which was given lbw.

Dowlin’s dismissal set the tone for a period where West Indies could not gain a foothold and wicket after wicket tumbled. Play will resume today with the hosts needing something very special to rescue the match.

A better day for the West Indies at the National Stadium in St Georges yesterday as the bowling attack had Bangladesh all out for 232, 5 runs less than the Windies had managed in their first innings.

On a slow wicket Kemar Roach was finding a lot of joy against the Bangladeshi batsmen, taking six of their wickets with some aggressive bowling. His fast bouncers spooked the opposition into hitting some wild shots which were food and drink to the fielders. A late stand for Raqibul and Mushfiqur looked to have settled some nerves before they were again taken apart by Roach’s bumpers.

Overnight the West Indies are 56-1 in reply.

Grenada will host the 2nd Digicel Test Match between the West Indies and the Bangladesh at the Grenada National Stadium Fri Jul 17 – Tue Jul 21.
